How Long Does SEO Take To Work?

If you are a small business considering search engine optimization, one of the questions you might ask is, “How long does SEO take to work?”

Great question!

There are 2 steps to small business SEO work.  The first step is on-page optimization.  Changes you make to your website can take up to 30 days to be recognized (on average) by Google.  To check the last time your website was crawled by Google, do this:

In Google, type “”.  You will be returned a screen that looks like this:

This is Google’s cache of It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Jul 3, 2011 18:17:43 GMT.

This post is being written on July 8, 2011, so the last time my site was crawled by Google was 5 days ago.  Any changes I make to the site, whether it be new content, or optimization work, will not be recognized by Google until it crawls my site again.  Remember, on average it takes about 30 days or less.  This is the first answer to the question of “How long does SEO take?”

The second step in small business SEO work is creating backlinks that point back to your website.  Once a backlink is created, it has got to be indexed by Google in order for it to be useful.  Backlinks that are not indexed are virtually worthless to your ability to move up in search rankings.

Depending where your backlink is located helps to determine how quickly it will be indexed.  Just as with changes to your own site usually take around 30 days to be recognized by Google, a good rule of thumb for backlinks to be recognized is also 30 days.

However, there are some backlinks that may never get indexed, and that is where you need an SEO professional to assist you.  I use a tool called Backlink Energizer, which is proving to be efficient at increasing the indexation rate for many of the forum posts I’ve created.  Forum posts are one of the ways I use to boost up my site and my clients’ sites in the search rankings for certain keywords.

There are other tools available to SEO professionals and SEO do-it-yourself’ers to get articles, blog comments, and social bookmarking pages indexed almost immediately.
